Why Big Walker Lookout and Country Store Is The Best Roadside Attraction in Wytheville, VA

Big Walker Lookout_12

I love a good roadside attraction. Sometimes the weirder the better and sometimes I love them just because they are awesome and offer a really unique reason to stop and get out of the car. That completely holds true for Big Walker Lookout and Country Store.

Big Walker Lookout is located on US-52, the national scenic bypass for I-77, in Southwest Virginia. It would be easy to pass by this attraction and keep on going to your next destination, but see why you should really take the time to visit Big Walker Lookout.

Big Walker Lookout

Big Walker Lookout Observation Tower

The number one reason to make the stop is the observation tower. Even if you have a fear of heights you’ll want to make the stop because the views, even from the parking lot are amazing.

When you arrive at Big Walker Lookout it means you’ve arrived at the highest point on the national scenic byway and, if you’re brave enough, you’re about to go even higher. Here you’ll have the opportunity to climb a 100 foot observation tower that takes you to some of the best panoramic vistas in the region.

I’ve attempted to climb the tower a couple times now. I’ve made it about halfway each time, but my fear of heights stops me from going to the top. The metal tower has wooden plank steps that are nicely spaced making the climb fairly easy. However, the closer you get to the top, the more likely you are to feel the sway of the tower. Perfectly safe, but good to know about in advance.

I will say, even from halfway up the views are spectacular! On a clear day you should be able to see 5 states from the top of the tower: Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Speaking with the owner she said the best time to see all 5 is in the winter when the skies are crisp and the views are clear from foliage.

Personally, I think the fall would be a stunning time to visit with the color change on all the leaves and at just $8/person it’s money well spent for the views.
